About The Author

Jacqueline Woodson

Picture
“I want to leave a sign of having been here. The rest of my life is committed to changing the way the world thinks, one reader at a time.”
Over the past two decades, Jacqueline Woodson has penned dozens of books, including novels, a memoir, and picture books — lots of them award winners, many of them best sellers.  Through her characters and subject matter, she explores important issues such as race, class, gender, and sexuality, giving voice to people in our communities who are sometimes silenced.

Woodson’s Red at the Bone is this winter’s One Book, One Community selection. It was chosen by the partnering libraries not only because it tells a compelling story, lyrically so, but because it touches on themes that are timely and important. Moving back and forth in time, the novel examines the influence of history and community on the experiences, decisions, and relationships of the members of two Black families who are brought together by a teen pregnancy.

Born in Columbus, Ohio, Jacqueline Woodson grew up in Greenville, South Carolina, and Brooklyn, New York, and holds a B.A. in English. Among her many accolades, she is a four-time Newbery Honor winner, a four-time National Book Award finalist, and a three-time Coretta Scott King Award winner. In 2020, she was named a MacArthur Foundation fellow. She lives with her family in Brooklyn.
